The nomadic life of one of the oldest Italian families of amusement rides’ owners and operators, the Marsicos.

The history of the Marsico family began in the early 1900s with Nicola, an acrobat who soon after decided to found the Marsico Circus. It was the 1920s and Nicola, together with his family, travelled around Europe entertaining thousands of people: clowns, trapeze artists, acrobats, lion tamers… everyone in the family learned the art of the circus and show business. Wherever it goes, the circus takes people and their caravans with it.

Around the end of the 60’s the activity of the Marsico family changed, they decided to become carousel operators, the job that they still do today, 50 years later, on a regular basis. Their endless touring around the world, without stopping and without a return to “home”, seems to end when Domenico, Nicola’s son, buys a piece of land in San Cesario di Lecce, a small town in Puglia.

The nomadic lifestyle after almost a century is about to change; but can a piece of land change the history and the soul of those who have made the world their home?

Marsico – Down on the street is the result of two years of photographic research that tells the story of the family’s life through a typical day, from morning to night. The long journeys and the hardest work, but also the moments of rest in the caravans, the family parties and the nights with the rides, closely scrutinizing an ancient profession and almost always alien to the bourgeois world and its rules of behavior.

La vita di una delle più antiche famiglie di giostrai italiane, i Marsico.

La storia nomade della famiglia Marsico comincia nei primi del ‘900 con Nicola, un saltimbanco che di lì a poco decide di fondare il Circo Marsico. Sono gli anni ’20 e Nicola, assieme alla sua famiglia, gira l’Europa intrattenendo migliaia di persone: clown, trapezisti, acrobati, domatori di leoni…tutti in famiglia imparano l’arte del circo e dello spettacolo. Ovunque vada, il circo porta con sé le persone e le loro carovane.

Intorno la fine degli anni ‘60 l’attività della famiglia Marsico cambia, decidono di diventare dei giostrai, il lavoro che ancora oggi, a distanza di 50 anni, svolgono regolarmente. Il loro infinito girare il mondo, senza sosta e senza un ritorno a “casa”, sembra terminare quando Domenico, il figlio di Nicola, compra un pezzo di terra a San Cesario di Lecce, un piccolo paese in Puglia.

Lo stile di vita nomade dopo quasi un secolo sta per cambiare; ma può un pezzo di terra cambiare la storia e l’anima di chi ha fatto del mondo la propria casa?

Marsico – Down on the street è il risultato di due anni di ricerca fotografica che racconta la vita della famiglia ripercorrendo una giornata tipo, dal mattino alla notte. I lunghi viaggi e il lavoro più duro, ma anche i momenti di pausa nei caravan, le feste in famiglia e le nottate con le giostre, scrutando da vicino un mestiere antico e quasi sempre estraneo al mondo borghese e alle sue regole di comportamento.
